Salvage and Revival at Donington Antiques Market

Salvage and revival means different things to different people. For some buyers who attend our events, it’s all about discovering a piece in its raw state and taking the satisfaction from giving it some TLC and breathing new life into it.  For others, they are looking for that restored and polished piece to compliment their home.  In relation to the latter, there’s sometimes a lot of hard work that goes into preparing some of the items that are brought to the shows.

This is often the case for one of the casuals who attended Donington Antiques Market on Monday, a chap called Mr Richens who owns a reclamation yard in Collingham, Newark. He stated that he has a constant stream of clients from the USA, Japan and, amongst others, Korea, who request specific items for him to find.  He had an impressive display of light fittings which he’d carefully cleaned up from being under a thick black coating to reveal the smart dark green colouring underneath.

Lovingly Upcycled Tables

We also spoke to Robert and Sandra Hadley regarding a beautiful table they’d lovingly upcycled.  The base is from an old sewing machine that once belonged to Sandra’s sister. The frame for the top was constructed by Robert, who used to be a cabinet maker. Sandra, who has been a potter for more than 10 years, made the tiles.  They got into selling salvage after retirement when they started attending auctions and eventually started running out of space.  After joking that they needed a van to start selling, they spotted one for sale whilst at a supermarket car park for £700 and thought “can we afford that?” and the answer was “yes!” so there began their new venture as stall holders.  They now enjoy nothing better than making that private sale and seeing their items go to a new home to be cherished.

It’s no surprise that the table sold in less than an hour but Robert and Sandra are regulars at Donington so you catch them at a later date to see what wonderful items they’ll be bringing with them.  Alternatively you can contact them on 01538 722 523 or
