Reclaimed Kitchen with a New Industrial Twist

Do you have an eye for style and a concern for the environment? Ripley Castle is the place to be for the upcoming Home Restoration & Salvage Show 18-19 May. With large displays of reclaimed objects, statuary upcycled furniture and innovative products, it’s the occasion to find real treasure imbued with history and character.

From kitchen units to large industrial style tables, Fulbeck Woods are planning a show stopping stand for visitors. The showcase will include a new range of furniture that looks identical to large cast iron machine bases – but with a twist – they’re all made from old metalwork, roof beams and waste wood (where possible).

Reclaimed Wooden Beams

Traditionally, large metalwork furniture is not only expensive but extraordinarily heavy. These transformed pieces are accessible to the masses, easy to maneuver and send a message of support to a sustainable environment. Now that’s the way to shop!

Salvage and Revival at Donington Antiques Market

Salvage and revival means different things to different people. For some buyers who attend our events, it’s all about discovering a piece in its raw state and taking the satisfaction from giving it some TLC and breathing new life into it.  For others, they are looking for that restored and polished piece to compliment their home.  In relation to the latter, there’s sometimes a lot of hard work that goes into preparing some of the items that are brought to the shows.

This is often the case for one of the casuals who attended Donington Antiques Market on Monday, a chap called Mr Richens who owns a reclamation yard in Collingham, Newark. He stated that he has a constant stream of clients from the USA, Japan and, amongst others, Korea, who request specific items for him to find.  He had an impressive display of light fittings which he’d carefully cleaned up from being under a thick black coating to reveal the smart dark green colouring underneath.

Lovingly Upcycled Tables

We also spoke to Robert and Sandra Hadley regarding a beautiful table they’d lovingly upcycled.  The base is from an old sewing machine that once belonged to Sandra’s sister. The frame for the top was constructed by Robert, who used to be a cabinet maker. Sandra, who has been a potter for more than 10 years, made the tiles.  They got into selling salvage after retirement when they started attending auctions and eventually started running out of space.  After joking that they needed a van to start selling, they spotted one for sale whilst at a supermarket car park for £700 and thought “can we afford that?” and the answer was “yes!” so there began their new venture as stall holders.  They now enjoy nothing better than making that private sale and seeing their items go to a new home to be cherished.

It’s no surprise that the table sold in less than an hour but Robert and Sandra are regulars at Donington so you catch them at a later date to see what wonderful items they’ll be bringing with them.  Alternatively you can contact them on 01538 722 523 or robert@roberthadley7.plus.com

Vintage Jewellery For Sale

Are you looking for Vintage Jewellery For Sale, or retro costume and designer jewellery? You’ll find it upon a visit to the Antiques & Home Show at the Lincolnshire showground. With around 200 jewellery exhibits at each fair, the selection is nothing short of phenomenal.

Art Deco Egyptian Jewelery

Take for example John and Jeanette Clarke’s stand at the recent fair, 1-2 April, where two American visitors were spotted fighting over a wonderfully eccentric art deco Egyptian revival necklace. The gold plated base metal piece with enameling and faux lapis stones, closely resembles the pectoral scarab amulet from Tutankhamun’s tomb and was made by the famous Birmingham designer Thomas Fattorini – possibly to coincide with the 1972 Tutankhamun exhibition at the British Museum.

Several ‘Wendy Gell’ brooches, necklaces and cuffs were also found for sale. Gell’s sequined Disney character necklaces like the Mickey Mouse on the Clarke’s stand, frequented the cover of Vogue throughout the 70s and 80s and are now predominantly sold in the US. Whimsical unique bijou were made for Oscar de laRenta, worn by celebrities such as Cindy Crawford and Isabella Rossilini and can be found in the private collections of Elton John (designed sunglasses for him), Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Taylor, the late Andy Warhol and Princess Diana.

Amongst the Givenchy, Monet and Yves Saint Laurent costume adornments at the fair were many bangles and beads made from Bakelite. ‘The material of a thousand uses’ was developed by Leo Baekeland in 1907 and has been used in jewellery, pipe stems, letter openers, cigarette holders, kitchen wares and children’s toys throughout the decades. Some Bakelite pieces have sold at auction for more than £1000 but the price points at Lincoln are substantially more affordable for savvy fashionistas.

To Market, To Market, To Fair – Vintage Carts

We often see unusual items for sale at the Antiques and Home Show. This Show was no different. A superb green two-wheeled Whitechapel cart circa.1895, made its way from Sutton Coach Works in Ely to the Lincolnshire showground, unarmed on this occasion with a piglet to sell at market, but offered for sale at the Antiques & Home Show.

Stunning Vintage Carts

Carts have been in continuous use since the invention of the wheel in the 5th millennium BC.  Victorian traders such as market gardeners used this type of carriage with typical ultra lightweight runabouts, to move people or goods about in a hurry. This vintage cart with painted wood body, wool cloth upholstery, lamps and two iron shod 16 spoke wheels, can be run on man power or horse drawn. In its past life the cart may have been used on a days shooting, as the spacious area under the seat on Whitechapel carts is ideal for the gundogs or braces of birds.

Today the vehicle could fit up to four passengers, and potential uses include touristic sightseeing, wedding ceremonies or simply as a detailed stationary object for display.

The vehicle is in full working condition, finished to a high standard with new paintwork, in the original style, which was actually carried out by a 71 year old restorer. Collectors would know that a full restoration of this type costs in excess of £1,500, so the modest asking price of £2,200 seems fair.

Planes, trains and vehicles alike, there is no end to the remarkable objects that emerge at the Antique & Homes Show in Lincolnshire. Shoppers from 15 different countries passed through the Buyer’s Lounge at the fair with quantities from the USA, Korea and Japan. This was a great boost for the 1800 dealers who exhibited for the first time this year after a snowed out January event.

Fulbeck Woods Wow Traditional Antiques Fair

Fulbeck Woods at the Antique & Home Show at Lincolnshire Showground

Monday 3, Tuesday 4 & Wednesday 5 December 2012

Best friends Gethyn Tree, 32, and Alex Stevenson, 25, take recycling seriously. Together under the name of Fulbeck Woods (the village they grew up in) their ‘natural designs for living’ range from the practical to the surreal. Functional objects made with old materials were exhibited amongst traditional antique furniture at the Antique & Home Show at the Lincolnshire Showground, and left fairgoers bewildered and intrigued.
